Season 2 of the hit Netflix series filmed at 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck.

Love is Blind, the reality show where contestants start the season in different “pods” where they cannot see each other, filmed an episode of their second season at 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck. Obviously, we were part of the post-pod portion of the show. The hit Netflix series debuted the episode featuring 360 CHICAGO on Friday, February 18, 2022. While the streaming giant is deliberately obtuse about its ratings, the show was in the Netflix Top 10 every day since season 2 premiered. The portion from 360 was filmed in January of 2021 when we were closed to the public due to the ongoing pandemic. Watch the full clip below, and catch the the first two seasons on Netflix. Minor spoilers ahead.

Monday Night Countdown visited Chicago’s highest thrill ride.

360 CHICAGO Observation Deck appeared on national broadcast television on Monday, December 20th 2021 as part of ESPN’s Monday Night Football pregame show, Monday Night Countdown. The pregame show averages 1.4 million viewers. Former NFL star Randy Moss, along with hosts Adam Schefter and Booger McFarland taped a segment on TILT earlier that day. A viral TikTok TILT video I created for 360 CHICAGO was shared on ESPN’s SportsCenter IG feed the week prior, capturing the attention of the ESPN producers.

I stopped by NBC Chicago to help the hosts get into the Halloween spirit.

360 CHICAGO offered an exclusive new experience after 6 PM all October long that include a longer, faster, scarier ride on TILT. Guests could also purchase a special All Access Pass ticket which included a Halloween-themed cocktail from the observation deck’s 94th-floor bar.

This was my first appearance on Chicago Today, so naturally I brought along some sample cocktails to taste.

Good Morning America featured 360 CHICAGO on national television.

Host Michael Strahan visited Chicago as part of a series exploring things to do across America as the country’s pandemic restrictions were slowly lifted. He stopped by 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck to try TILT, Chicago’s highest thrill ride. The footage appeared on Good Morning America, reaching over 3 million households for an estimated publicity value of $142,000. As the point of contact for 360 CHICAGO, I set up the shoot with producers from ABC, provided b-roll footage, and coordinated messaging and drone filming.

NBC Chicago spotlighted 360 CHICAGO’s new photo exhibition.

Apart, Together officially opened to the public on February 26, 2021. The culmination of over six months of work, the exhibition had gone through multiple iterations on its way to launch. I spoke to NBC Chicago about the exhibition and why it was important to look back, even as we continued to deal with the effects of a global pandemic.

An Instagram campaign made for a socially distant time.

360 CHICAGO Observation Deck is known for its breathtaking views of Chicago, but with our windows temporarily closed to the public, we asked to see our followers’ views instead. We wanted to encourage social distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19 by having people show us the view from their home using #MyViralView on Instagram and telling us how they’re spending their time during the crisis.

Socially Distant Views is a campaign for a very difficult time in the world. With everything closed, I was genuinely curious about how people were spending their time. What’s unique about their space? What’s their biggest challenge? What gives them hope? These are themes we will continue to explore as we adjust to our new normal and slowly return to business, even if it’s far from business as usual.

Every dog is downward when you’re 1,000 feet up at 360 CHICAGO’s 94th-floor yoga class.

360 Sky Yoga, 360 CHICAGO’s weekly sky-high yoga series, returned for online-only sessions beginning on Tuesday, May 5th 2020. Instructors Ashley Christensen and Britta Eumann led viewers through hour-long sessions on Facebook Live from over 1,000 feet above Chicago.

Viewers were invited to take in 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck’s breathtaking views from a safe distance and enjoy free weekly yoga sessions from the comfort of their own homes. 

Program Details

  • Virtual Sky Yoga sessions ran for two months in between Chicago’s first COVID-19 lockdown and the observation deck reopening in June.

  • I filmed, edited, and broadcast each hour-long session. 

  • Sessions premiered on Facebook at a set time each week. Users were able to view recordings and replay sessions after the first broadcast.

In 2019, 360 CHICAGO wanted to show the world The Real Chicago, with a little help from our friends.

The Real Chicago was a social campaign designed around giving visitors to Chicago a more authentic experience of the city. The majority of the visitors to 360 CHICAGO are from out of town, and the perception of our city is something we truly care about. If first impressions are everything, why not start with something real? Good or bad, pretty or ugly, we wanted to give our visitors and followers an accurate idea of what it’s like to live here every day. Chicago as told by Chicagoans.

We reached out to some of our favorite neighborhoods (including our own), to help us put together some neighborhood takeovers on the 94th floor.

4 Neighborhoods, Over 100 Businesses

  • The Maginificent Mile

  • Old Town

  • Andersonville

  • Pilsen

Let’s get real.

With delicious food samples, exciting demonstrations, and drink specials, these nights were perfect opportunities to discover the hidden and not-so-hidden gems of some of Chicago’s best neighborhoods.

Admission for each event was $12.50. Drink specials were available at BAR 94 at each takeover, including limited edition neighborhood-themed cocktails from  KOVAL Distillery.

Profits from the sale of each featured cocktail went directly back to the neighborhood associations that helped put the events together.

Have you ever tried to take photos of fireworks on your phone?

As with most things related to photography, I stumbled upon how to shoot fireworks entirely by coincidence. 360 CHICAGO is a great spot to watch Navy Pier’s weekly summer fireworks shows. As their social media manager, I wanted more photos to promote the fireworks nights, so I headed up with my starter DSLR (a surprisingly resilient Nikon D5300) and a tripod.

I quickly figured out that trying to capture a single burst or explosion was far less impressive than capturing multiple bursts over the course of one longer exposure. Honestly, this method is so easy and effective that it feels like cheating. Here are my methods.

DSLR Settings for Fireworks

  • Shoot in Manual mode. You can try to auto focus early and then switch over, but you should be in Manual.

  • Set your ISO low. I usually leave mine at 100.

  • Keep your aperture somewhere around f/11. It’s entirely situational, but this setting has worked best for me.

  • Keep the shutter open. At the beginning of a fireworks show, you can set it for anywhere between 15 and 30 seconds. Towards the end, you might need to get a little creative and use Bulb mode. More on that in a minute.

Try this trick.

It can be tough to shoot long exposures of fireworks shows because of all the smoke. The longer the show goes on, the more smoke there is. You can solve this by finding a flat, black surface. I used the back of an iPad the first. First, set your camera to Manual and your shutter speed to Bulb. Open your shutter when your have the first fireworks in frame. When the fireworks aren’t exploding, cover your lens with the black surface. Then remove the cover when the next batch start going off. Your end result should be a bunch of bursts stacked on top of one another with very little smoke blocking them out.

Fireworks Photography Do’s and Don’ts

  • DO use a tripod and a remote release. You can use a cable or wireless release. Use what works for you.

  • DON’T use your flash. Unless you’re fancy and have a foreground subject.

  • DO find the right vantage point in advance. You don’t want to get caught focusing on the wrong area in the sky.

  • DON’T forget extra batteries. Taking long exposures will wear out your battery fast.
